THE Howard League for Penal Reform has set up an independent commission to investigate the best way of dealing with people who commit crimes and how we can all work to make our communities safer. We want to hear from your readers.
The Commission on English Prisons Today is considering how to make justice a local affair. It is interested in hearing how local people can have control over how money is spent and how we can invest money to tackle the underlying causes of crime.
Its new consultation paper suggests that local control of prisons and community sentencing might be more effective than the current bureaucratic and central system. The Commission has put a questionnaire on its website and is calling for ideas and submissions. The website is www.prisoncommission.org.uk

Rodgers,

SHEFFIELD 02/10/2008 14:10:17
OUR PRESENT COURT SYSTEM IS OUT OF DATE NOW. ESPECIALLY THE MAGISTRATES COURTS. YES WE HAVE GUILTY PEOPLE WALKING FREE FROM OUR COURTS, BUT ON THE OTHER SIDE WE HAVE INNOCENT PEOPLE BEING CONVICTED OF CRIMES THEY HAVE NEVER COMMITTED. SMALL CRIMES WHEREAS THE ACCUSED IS ADVISED TO PLEAD GUILTY TO SAVE TIME AND ESCAPE A SERIOUS PENALTY EVEN IF THE ACCUSED IS INNOCENT. THIS HAPPENS REGULARLY IN THE MAGISTRATES COURT. MANY YOUNG PEOPLE ARE TOLD " THIS MAGISTARTE IS A BAD ONE, THEY ALWAYS BELIEVE THE POLICE ". OR THIS MAGISTRATE WAS ONCE BURGLED HE FINDS THEM ALL GUILTY. MAGISTRATES COURTS HAVE BECOME UNFAIR AND UNJUST. WE NEED TO ADOPT A BETTER SAFER SYSTEM. CROWN COURTS WORK WELL. THOUGH OLD FASHIONED AND WRAPPED IN GOBBLE DO GOOK AND POMP AND CURCUMSYANCE, FANCY DRESS PARADES. A HUGE RE ORGANISATION IS NEEDED. THIS WOULD SAVE MILLIONS OF POUNDS. AS FOR PRISONS. GO BACK IN TIME AND MAKE PRISONS PLACES TO BE FEARED. THOUGH MANY CRIMINALS END UP IN PRISON THAT SHOULD NEVER BE IN PRISON.
