WE need to get the whole issue of dogs in restaurants in proportion (Letters, Aug 16). I am sure that the cleanliness of Dimitri Sorganes's cafe is entirely beyond reproach. But what problems would a dog have caused, a well behaved guide dog in this case?
If you go to any European village, town or city, you will find people in restaurants happily eating with dogs around, seated adjacent to food preparation areas.

How on earth do the Europeans survive without the protection of the Health and Safety
Executive?

Humans present far more problems

I must reply to John Scholey (Aug 16) regarding his defence of Dimitri Sorganes, the café proprietor who barred the lady with a guide dog, giving the excuse that he was only thinking of the well-being of his customers.

How on earth can he think that a well-behaved, fully-trained guide dog under perfect control could possibly cause any food contamination? From what I have seen in many cafes, I would have thought there was far more of a health risk from the unhygienic habits of human beings. As Mr Scholey readily admits this was indeed a breach of the law. Anyone supporting the banning of this lady and her dog should be ashamed of themselves.

Why do cyclists avoid safer option?

TRAVELLING into Sheffield along Penistone Road in the morning, I come across several pedal cyclists struggling towards town through the heavy traffic on the dual carriageway road.

However, I notice that the council has very kindly provided a clearly marked cycle track on the left of the vehicle carriageways along this road most of the way into town. Over several weeks I have never seen a single cyclist using the designated cycle track.

Can anyone tell me why cyclists would prefer to take their chances in the heavy traffic on the dual carriageway rather than enjoy the clear, empty and safe cycle tracks specially installed and reserved for their use?

Peter C McGregor, Aldene Avenue, Sheffield 6
