My dad, who is 80 years old and is 10st of bone and gristle, pulled his green bin, which was full of privet and grass cuttings, off his front, on to his drive and down the footpath in front of his house.
He pulled it across the grass verge and placed it with its wheels facing out on to the road. He didn't drag it, he tipped it up and pulled it properly. Guess what.

He got back from town to find the bin in the same spot with a label on the top sayi
ng it was too heavy to move safely for the bin men to empty it. What a joke!

What do you think? Post your comments below.

The bin men only had to move the bin four paces backwards, turn it to sideways and put it on to the lifting gear. What kind of weak specimen of bin men have we got? This is ridiculous.

How can an 80 year old man move a bin all that way, on his own, for some fit bloke at least half his age to say: "Can't move that. It's too heavy."

I and a lot of other people pay taxes for them to move the bins, heavy or not.

What next? A fireman not going into a fire because it's hot? A policeman who won't arrest a man in case he gets hurt? An ambulanceman not attending a crash scene in case there might be blood?

Bin men be ashamed of yourselves.

JH, Sheffield

As I was concerned about this nonsense, I contacted Veolia some time ago to find out how heavy was "too heavy"?

I have a written reply which refuses to give a specific weight, but states that my bins would never be "too heavy" so long as it was only filled with the approved waste (and not compacted).

Ask them to come and check the contents and to state how heavy it should be!

I have been saying for a long time now, Veolia need a shaking up. There are many people that are not fit enough to move their bin, These people can apply for dispensation. Veolia should be there to advise them of this. I am also aware that many complaints are made about this French Company. None of the complaints are dealt with to our satisfaction. The last time I complained in public, I received threats from a member of Veolia staff. It is time now that another company was given the chance, Let us have a local service employing local people. A service that does not employ agency workers on the cheap. So come on Sheffield Council. Let us have a survey as to the future of this incompetent company.
