While in opposition we voiced our fears over the lack of forward planning in making sure we had the investment to keep council housing up to the standard achieved as a result of the Decent Homes Programme. The then controlling Labour Group told local tenants not to worry and that the Liberal Democrats were simply trying to scaremonger.
The recent report in The Star which refers to the Sheffield Homes report (June 30) seems to confirm our worst fears and shows that Labour have left local tenants in an unacceptable situation. Labour have mislead tenants and have done nothing to addre
ss the huge budget shortfall. As a result council housing faces an uncertain future.

However, local tenants can rest assured that the new Liberal Democrat council will work around the clock to find a solution to Labour's mess. We understand that council homes cannot be allowed to fall into a state of disrepair again and we will be putting that case to the Government.

Unlike Labour, we will be open and honest and involve local tenants throughout the process. Our first step will be to talk to tenants groups to see how we can work together to tackle the issue. We are committed to doing everything we can to make sure that local tenants' homes are maintained to an excellent standard.

Coun Bob McCann, Liberal Democrat Cabinet member for Housing and Sustainable, Safer Communities

So is it correct that those homes that were going to be upgraded have been left in the lurch.
I was promised my council property would be modernisesd with a new kitchen and shower fitted now it looks like it was all lies.

Its strange how Sheffield Homes now have a budget shortfall after the £millions ploughed into it.

An investigation into where the money has gone should be undertaken. How much money was taken/diverted from the budget to finance non housing ideas or needs?
