Law firm Nabarro's Sheffield projects team has acted for Rotherham Council over the privatisation of the its crematorium and cemeteries.
Dignity Funerals has taken over responsibility for the council's crematorium and cemetery at East Herringthorpe and nine other cemeteries across the borough.

A total of £3 million will be invested in refurbishing and improving facilities at the cr
ematorium as part of the Public Private Partnership with Dignity.

The company will build a a landscaped memorial gardens and a new bereavement services administration centre, 120-space visitor car park and purpose-built grounds maintenance depot.

Dignity will also be responsible for improvements to other cemeteries and finding ways to meet future burial requirements .

Nabarro's project partner, Tim Shaw, believes that other local authorities across the country could follow Rotherham's example.

"New environmental standards require a 50 per cent reduction in mercury emissions from crematoria by 2012, requiring investment by many local authorities," he says.

"Partnerships such as these provide the means for councils to lever in new investment, ensuring high standards for what is an essential public service."

Nabarro has substantial experience acting for councils and private sector operators involved in Public Private Partnerships and Private Finance Initiatives.
